Iris Vane

Asks what the pattern is protecting before asking how to change it.
Iris Vane is the name one of our astrologers writes under. She prefers it that way: the readings are hers, the name is not. Every page on this site starts from a chart computed from real positions and real dates, and nothing is published without hers review.
The room beneath the room
People usually arrive here with a sentence they have said before. Why do I keep choosing this kind of person? Why do I leave when things become good? Why do I know better and still do it again?
I began studying astrology thirteen years ago in Edinburgh. The first years were conventional: natal charts, aspects, houses, transits. Then I became less interested in what a person was like and more interested in what a person repeated.
That led me into private mentorship around psychological astrology, symbolic work and the slower planets, especially Saturn and Pluto, alongside the Moon and Chiron. I also spent several years in non-clinical study groups exploring myth, archetype and depth-psychology literature. I am not a therapist, and I do not use astrology as diagnosis. I use it as a language for patterns.
Across more than 2,940 charts and client conversations, I noticed something that became the center of my work: the behavior people hate most in themselves often began as protection.
The person who disappears first may once have learned that leaving hurts less than being left. The person who controls every detail may have learned that unpredictability is dangerous. The person who chooses unavailable partners may be very skilled at wanting love while staying protected from receiving it.
My gift, if I have earned the right to call it one, is hearing the old logic inside a present-day behavior. Astrology helps me locate the symbolic architecture around that logic. The Moon shows me where safety becomes instinctive. Saturn shows me where fear hardens into rules. Pluto shows me where power and survival become entangled. Chiron often points toward the place a person has built an identity around being wounded.
I do not believe a chart sentences anyone to repeat themselves. That would make astrology useless. I believe the chart can make repetition visible sooner. And visibility matters. A pattern cannot negotiate with you as effectively once you can see what it is trying to do.
The question is rarely what is wrong with me. The better question is what is this pattern still trying to protect.
